It’s an ambitious aim, but the friends, who decided to go into business together over beers two years ago, dove headfirst into the challenge. “We did so much research. We bought all the books covering the denim industry,” Reed says. “We just nerded out.” A few companies they tracked down include Canadian-based Naked & Famous, San Francisco’s Tellason, and cult Japanese brand Momotaro, which they visited in April, traveling more than 6,500 miles to Kojima.
Every company they work with creates raw selvedge denim the old-fashioned way—on a shuttle loom, a machine rarely used since big brands such as Levi’s switched manufacturing techniques in the ’70s and ’80s.

Vintage Collection by Nylo Wool
Nylo Wool is a collection of vintage pieces that are hand selected, by Daniel Brown based in Dallas, Texas. All items are hand picked based on quality, style and rareness. Majority of the items are found in and around the Dallas Fort Worth area, purchased from the original owner or their family, giving these pieces a second life here in Dallas. Brands range from vintage Levis, L.L. Bean, Pendleton, and Wrangler, with military and one off brands mixed in, focusing on items that are made in the USA and date anywhere between 1930s-1990s.
FEATURED BRAND: MOMOTARO
Momotaro was born in Japan’s denim mecca, Kojima. Momotaro has full control over the process behind their products, from conception to production, giving the brand an unparalleled amount of creative freedom. The name Momotaro is born from a famous Japanese folktale, in which a boy born from a giant peach grows up to save his village from marauding demons. The pink selvedge and inseam are an homage to the peach in this story, and the signature battle stripes represent the war flag the boy carried into battle. Thanks to their careful attention to detail, Momotaro has become one of the most reputable denim brands in the world. They are obsessed with denim and it shows.
FEATURED BRAND: Nudie Jeans Co.
Swedish denim label Nudie has come a long ways since their start in the coastal city of Gothenberg in 2001. They are a legend in the denim world, especially when it comes to fades. Today, they offer 100% Organic Cotton and Free Repairs on their jeans.
FEATURED BRAND: Naked and Famous
Naked and Famous breaks all the rules, while still creating authentic jeans that stay true to denim head culture. They source denim from legendary mills in Kojima, Japan–arguably the denim capital of the world. From their shop in Canada, they design, cut, and sew every pair to insure the highest quality.
Founded in 2006 by second generation denim enthusiast Brandon Svarc, Naked & Famous has quickly become one of the most popular raw denim brands in the world. Naked & Famous uses only the rarest denim fabrics from mills that are committed to producing the highest quality denim in the world. Due to their willingness to use unique and wild fabrics, Naked & Famous has garnered a reputation for being one of the most innovative brands in the industry today
FEATURED BRAND: Deus Ex Machina
Deus ex Machina (god from the machine) roared into Australia’s cultural consciousness in 2006, with some neatly customised motorcycles and a quaint notion that doing something is more fun than just owning something. Deus ex Machina is a step bigger than a brand: it’s a culture.
FEATURED BRAND: Tellason
Tellason comes to us from San Francisco. An indie brand who makes an incredible pair of all-American jeans. They work with Cone Mills White Oak, a legendary denim mill in North Carolina. Together they design and create tough and durable jeans, with a modern fit.
FEATURED BRAND: Japan Blue
The brand has gained notoriety for their collaboration pieces that often push the boundaries of what raw denim is today. They source their cotton from Africa, create their own denim on vintage shuttle looms originally used by Levi’s in the 1920’s, and design, cut, and sew them all under one roof.
Deep Ellum Denim is focused on the highest quality, thoughtfully crafted products for men and women. Our focus is denim - raw selvedge denim - though we carry a variety of products sourced from Japan, USA, Italy, and Canada including jackets, flannels, shirts, socks, watch caps, beanies, and hats. We also carry a vintage collection that is hand selected here in Dallas Fort Worth by Nylo Wool. We believe in sustainable items that you'll not only want to wear every day, but keep for years and years. The types of products that will age over time and become more loved than the day they were purchased.
In 2019, we began crafting our own proprietary line of Deep Ellum Denim. These are crafted by hand in Texas. Never abandon. Never lose. Keep for life. ⚡️ This is our custom made-to-order denim. By custom we mean: choose between a Japanese or White Oak US denim fabric, antique copper or nickel hardware, three stitch color options, and three inseam options of classic gold, red, or blue symbolizing the Texas flag. Email us for questions or come by the shop.
